Private Ultrasound for Potters Bar – Fast, Fixed-Price Scans in London
Expert ultrasound a short drive from Potters Bar, with no referral to wait for
The London Diagnostic Centre (TheLDC) is a private diagnostic clinic in London, N13 — a short drive from Potters Bar and south Hertfordshire. Waiting for a GP referral is stressful when a symptom is worrying you. That is why we take self-referrals. You can book a private ultrasound scan here yourself, at a time that suits you, and our clinical team includes experienced sonographers and consultant radiologists.
Perhaps you are chasing an answer to long-standing pain, a lump you have found, or a symptom your GP wants imaged. An ultrasound scan is often a good first look at soft tissue, organs, joints and lumps. It cannot see everything, though. Sound waves do not pass through bone or gas, so some questions are better answered by an X-ray or another test, and we will tell you if that applies to you. A scan is information, not a diagnosis, and it does not replace seeing a doctor. If a symptom is new, is getting worse quickly, or is worrying you, please speak to your GP or call NHS 111 as well as booking.
The scanning room is quiet and unhurried, and the sonographer explains what they are looking at as they go, so nothing on the day is a surprise. Ready to book? Call us or send a request online and the team will ring you back to agree a time. Nothing is paid online and the fee is confirmed with you before anything is arranged.

Not sure which scan you need? Get in touch and the team will help you choose, or arrange a private GP appointment if you would rather someone examined you first. We cannot diagnose anything over the telephone, and we will say so if a scan is not the right next step for you. If the scan you are looking for is not on the list, ask us — we may still be able to help.
How is an ultrasound performed?
An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to build a live picture of the organs and structures inside your body. It uses no ionising radiation, which is one reason it is used so widely in the NHS and in private clinics. Most people find it comfortable, though the probe can feel uncomfortable if it presses on an area that is already sore.
Please note that the clinic does not carry out pregnancy scans of any kind. If you are pregnant, or think you might be, tell us when you book, because it can affect whether a test is suitable for you.
Here is what happens on the day:
- You are asked to lie down and uncover only the area being scanned.
- A clear, water-based gel is applied to the skin so the sound waves travel properly.
- The sonographer moves a small handheld probe, called a transducer, over the area.
- The images appear on screen in real time and are saved for your report.
Most scans take less than half an hour. There is no sedation and no recovery time, so you can eat, drive and go back to your day straight afterwards. Some scans need a little preparation — a full bladder, or a few hours without food — and the team tell you exactly what is needed when they ring to confirm your appointment. Some pelvic scans give a clearer picture from inside, using a slim, tube-shaped probe; if that applies to you it is explained first, and nothing happens until you agree to it.
How long does an ultrasound take?
Most ultrasound appointments here run to around 20 to 30 minutes. That covers checking in, the scan itself, and any questions you want to put to the sonographer before you leave. The exact length booked for each scan is published with its price on this page, so you can see it before you book.
Your written report is normally e-mailed to you as a PDF within one working day of your appointment. You receive a copy and, with your consent, we can send it to your GP or consultant — for a weekend appointment that copy can take up to 48 hours. The team confirm the timing for your particular scan at the appointment rather than leaving you to guess.
The benefits of going private for your ultrasound
Choosing a private ultrasound at the London Diagnostic Centre is not only about being seen sooner. It is about knowing the price before you book, being scanned by someone who has the time to explain what they are seeing, and getting a written report you and your doctor can act on.
- No referral letter to chase and no waiting list for your scan.
- One fixed price for each scan, published before you book.
- Experienced sonographers and consultant radiologists on the clinical team.
- Saturday and Sunday appointments, 8am to 8pm, as well as Monday to Friday.
- Unhurried appointments, with the time booked for your scan published in advance.
Health worries do not keep office hours, which is why the clinic is open at the weekend as well as through the week. A scan will not always give the whole answer on its own, but it is often the quickest way to start finding one — and you leave with a written report to take to your doctor.

Brilliant service from booking appt to having the scan and report. The sonographer was extremely knowledgable and had a great bedside manner. I went on 29/12 and I didn't catch the name of the lady but I have to say she answered all my questions thoroughly and honestly.
Dr Bhagat was exceptionally thorough and reassuring. He explained the X-ray and ultrasound results clearly, ruling out any serious concerns and recommending the best next steps. His calm and caring approach put us at ease throughout. Highly recommended.

Frequently asked questions
The questions Potters Bar patients ask us most often before booking a ultrasound scan.
Cannot see yours? Get in touch or call — we would rather answer it than have you guess.
Do I need a GP referral for a private ultrasound?
No. You can book an ultrasound scan here yourself — that is one of the advantages of going private, because there is no referral letter to chase and no wait for one. If you already have a referral from a GP or a consultant, bring it with you, since it tells the clinician exactly what to look for.
How much does a private ultrasound cost in Potters Bar?
Every ultrasound scan the clinic offers is published with its price on this page, so you see the fee before you book. Musculoskeletal scans are priced per area, so a second area costs the same again and you are told before it is carried out. Nothing is paid online — the team confirm the cost with you when they ring you back, and nothing is added to it without you agreeing first.
Is the clinic actually in Potters Bar?
No, and we would rather say so plainly. The clinic is in London, N13 4RJ, at the rear of Grovelands Medical Centre on Grovelands Road. It is a short drive from Potters Bar down the A1000 or the A111, and close to Oakwood and Southgate on the Piccadilly line. The map on this page shows the area we serve. The address in the panel at the top of this page is where your appointment takes place.
How quickly can I get an ultrasound appointment?
Same or next-day appointments are often available. The clinic is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 8pm. Send a request or call and the team will tell you the earliest slot they can offer for the scan you need rather than quoting a general figure.
Does an ultrasound scan hurt?
It should not. For most scans the probe is simply pressed against the skin through gel and nothing enters the body. If the area is already sore, that pressure can be briefly uncomfortable — tell the sonographer and they will ease off. Some pelvic scans use a slim internal probe, which can feel uncomfortable as it is put in place; that is always explained and agreed with you first.
How do I prepare for my scan?
It depends on the scan. Some abdominal scans ask you not to eat for a few hours beforehand, and some pelvic scans ask you to arrive with a full bladder. Most need no preparation at all. The team tell you exactly what is needed when they ring to confirm your appointment, so there is nothing to work out from a leaflet.
What should I bring with me?
Photo identification, and your referral letter if you happen to have one. If you are claiming on private medical insurance, bring your policy or membership number and the authorisation reference your insurer has given you.
Is an ultrasound scan safe?
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves rather than ionising radiation, so there is no radiation dose and nothing that adds up between scans. The NHS states that there are no known risks from the sound waves used in an ultrasound scan, which is why one can be repeated as often as it is clinically useful. Please note that this clinic does not carry out pregnancy scans of any kind. If you are pregnant, or think you might be, tell us when you book. It can affect whether a test is suitable for you.
How and when will I get my results?
Your scan is written up into a report, which is normally e-mailed to you as a PDF within one working day of your appointment. You receive a copy and, with your consent, we can send it to your GP or consultant — for a weekend appointment that copy can take up to 48 hours. Take the report to your doctor: they hold the rest of your medical history, which is what turns a result into a decision. If it has not arrived by when you were told to expect it, call the clinic and ask.
Can I use private health insurance?
Often, but it depends on your policy and your level of cover — an insurer recognising a clinic is not the same as your policy covering a particular scan. Check with your insurer before you book, ask whether they need to authorise it first, and bring the authorisation reference with you. There is more on paying with insurance on this site.
What is the difference between an ultrasound and an X-ray?
An ultrasound scan uses sound waves and is the better test for soft tissue, organs, tendons and lumps. An X-ray uses a small dose of ionising radiation and is the test most often used to look at bone. Sound waves do not pass through bone or gas, so an ultrasound cannot answer every question, and your GP or the sonographer may suggest a different test. The clinic offers both — private X-ray scans have their own page on this site.
