Liver Fibroscan Consultation

Our Liver Fibroscan Consultation provides a quick and non-invasive method to assess the health of your liver. With the use of cutting-edge ultrasound technology, the Fibroscan measures liver stiffness to determine the extent of liver fibrosis, a key indicator of liver damage. This test is crucial for early detection of conditions such as fatty liver disease, hepatitis, and cirrhosis, allowing for timely intervention and better management of liver health.

Our professionals will walk you through the consultation process in a professional and encouraging setting. We will give you a thorough report of your results following the Fibroscan, along with tailored suggestions for treatment or lifestyle modifications. Our team is available to help you at every stage, regardless of whether you are already dealing with liver health issues or are at risk. Make an appointment for your consultation right now to confidently take charge of your liver health.

What is the Liver Fibro Scan  used for?

A Liver FibroScan, also called transient elastography, is an ultrasound examination used to assess liver inflammation, without any invasive investigations.

This scan helps your doctor to identify:

  • Fibrosis: scarring in your liver
  • Liver stiffness: hardness of the liver related to liver scarring
  • Fatty change: an abnormal build-up of fat in your liver
  • Steatosis: a condition caused by having too much fat in your liver

FibroScans are specifically made to assist in the detection of liver cirrhosis. It is a non-invasive test that gauges liver stiffness, which is correlated with the degree of liver fibrosis, or scarring. FibroScan can assist in determining whether a person has mild fibrosis, significant fibrosis, or cirrhosis, as the latter is the most advanced stage of liver fibrosis.

The FibroScan test is quick and doesn’t hurt. A physiologist performs it, creating an internal image of your liver with an ultrasound.

FibroScan gives doctors a thorough picture of the liver’s health, allowing them to diagnose and monitor the disease’s progression while taking treatment and other factors into account. The findings of the examination are crucial for efficiently tracking and assessing the effects of diseases like cirrhosis.

Preparing for your scan

Avoid eating or drinking anything for a period of Six hours before your FibroScan. Small sips of water or clear fluids are acceptable, if necessary, but don’t consume large quantities.

Before the FibroScan, we will talk with you about the procedure and ensure your comfort with it. Feel free to ask us any questions you may have.

There is no need to undress for the scan. However, we recommend avoiding dresses as we need access to your abdomen for the examination.

During your scan

You will be asked to lie on an examination couch with your right arm placed above your head. The physiologist will gently feel your abdomen to locate the appropriate landmark for placing the probe.

A water-based gel is applied to the skin on the abdomen and a probe is firmly moved over and back around the area.  Importantly, this device does not break the skin or require any insertion into the body.

The ultrasound creates soundwaves which pass through your skin to reach your liver and then bounce back, producing a sensation akin to a gentle flick against your skin. Rest assured, it should not cause any pain. These soundwaves create the images from the scan.

Typically, the entire scan takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Afterward, you can leave immediately and resume your regular activities without any delay.

Result of your scan

The result of the FibroScan will be sent to the doctor who referred you for the scan.

FAQs

A FibroScan is a non-invasive medical test that measures the stiffness of the liver. It is used to assess liver health and diagnose conditions such as fibrosis and cirrhosis.

A FibroScan uses a specialised probe to send a pulse of energy through the liver. The speed at which the pulse travels through the liver tissue provides an indication of liver stiffness, which is then translated into a measurement.

A FibroScan is typically recommended if your doctor suspects liver disease or wants to monitor the progression of an existing liver condition. It is commonly used for patients with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, fatty liver disease, or other chronic liver diseases.

No, a FibroScan is a painless procedure. You might feel a slight vibration on your skin when the pulse is applied, but it is generally well-tolerated and does not cause discomfort.

You should avoid eating or drinking anything, except water, for at least two to three hours before the test. It's best to follow any specific instructions provided by the London Diagnostic Centre.

The FibroScan procedure itself typically takes around 10-15 minutes. However, you should allow extra time for registration and any preliminary discussions with your healthcare provider.

FibroScan is a safe and non-invasive procedure with no known significant risks or side effects. It is considered a safe alternative to liver biopsy for assessing liver stiffness.

Most people can safely have a FibroScan. However, it may not be suitable for pregnant women or individuals with certain medical devices implanted, such as pacemakers. Always consult with your doctor at the London Diagnostic Centre for personalised advice.

Your results will typically be available immediately after the procedure. Your doctor will interpret the results and discuss them with you, explaining what they mean for your liver health.

Coverage for a FibroScan can vary depending on your insurance provider and plan. It's advisable to check with your insurance company or the billing department at the London Diagnostic Centre for specific information about coverage and costs.
